Story Behind the Art: My name is Siriporn Jeerang, but I go by Toy, born in 1968 in Ban Tung, a quiet village located in Man Wen district. With nine brothers and sisters and my parents were poor farmers. There were many things we could not afford. One of them was school, so I only studied up to grade 6. After school I did many things, before getting a job in a shop located in a large tourist village close by. Later married my husband, he used to be a skilled wood carver. He would carve a couple of months an intricate and large teakwood piece, and then would sell it very inexpensively to some buyer. It was an impossible way to earn a living, sometimes waiting for months before getting an income. Working in the shop I was getting paid little and the hours very long. One day it occurred to us that we could use our skills for ourselves. We took the chance and setup a little workshop at home in 2003. We would craft the same items I was crafting for the shop, but started with smaller pieces. We later could afford buying some raw materials in order to make bigger items. My husband assembled the items and I would do the finishing. It worked wonderful this way, and still does! We were able to gradually employ some of our friends in the village, about 9 people. And moved the workshop 50 meters away from home. The way we work is very simple, family and community style. We make items with the purpose of earning a fair living and the customers, in return, get quality items at a fair price.

"I love this bench. I like the details and workmanship. It is right size, it fits perfectly in our entry way. I am using it as an entry bench. It had a little bit of wood stain odor when we unpacked, but in couple days it was gone."

"this item arrived very quickly, and (as others have noted) all in one piece right out of the box! it is a beautiful and solid bench. look inside for the subtly carved pins to hold the doors shut.the only reason i gave a 4 for workmanship is that there seemed to be some residual stain, which produced a strong odor as well as rubbing off a bit. this was easily solved by giving the surfaces a once-over w/ a cloth.now we just need to get our cat to stop using the woven reed surface as a scratching post!i would definitely recommend this piece, especially since it is a fair trade item! way to go, overstock!"

"This is a nice unique looking bench. We have it at the end of our bed. The only thing is the top could use a little more support inside. When my husband sits on it it bows in the middle. It scares me that he may bust threw. I definitely wouldn't use it to hold anything heavy like a t.v."

"It comes sticky and smelly and poorly finished. To much stain applied unevenly even the hinges are painted . All the cane is black around the edges where someone who could care less applied way to much stain. I had to remove the excess of the stain and put a different finish on it. The product without the finish is a nice piece. If you could by it unfinished or finished correctly it would be a good buy."

"This piece is unique and offers a more worldly spin to my more modern decorated foyer. The kids use it to sit on when putting on their shoes, so it is functional as well - quite sturdy. I have even used it as a step stool a few times to reach into closet shelf. Offers great storage below and easy to move around - not too heavy. But the best part is it comes completely assembled. "I actually bought this item to use as a flat screen TV stand (as a few other reviewers suggest they did), but the item is far too low for that, in my opinion. That said, the bench makes a great, ya' know, bench, so all is well.There was no assembly (just dumping it out of the box), no weird smell (as some said), and no weird mold (again, as others said). The bench is really well made and not nearly as flimsy as I thought it might be. Great storage!Definitely pick up this bench. I'm not a big fan of the Asian style in general, but this piece is nice enough that it fits my Mediterranean-esque home."

"Beautiful rustic SE Asian look. The door pins give it a nice touch (the doors have a magnetic closure). In the piece I got, the doors are a little tighter to open/close than I'd have preferred, but that's a minor issue. I use it as a console for a 52" TV. The sizing couldn't have been better if it were custom-made! (Make sure your screen clears the decorative curls at the edge though.) For folks with lots of A/V components, the storage space may not be enough. The slats in the front work well - they hide the components, yet help with wireless connectivity. The back is a bit flimsy (which was good for me since I wanted to drill holes for cables)."

"This very handsome little chest/bench arrived promptly, well packed and fully assembled. I would have given it 5 stars all the way except for the facts that there were some edges that were rougher than they should be and the stain was not rubbed at all so that it kept coming off on my hands. I rubbed it and then rubbed it down twice more with Howard's Feed N Wax, and now it is just fine."

"I bought it to use as a component holder under my flat screen tv. It works great. We had to take the back off (which was a little flimsey) so the components could get air and so they could fit. The interior is much smaller than the outside listed dimensions due to the way the doors close but I love it. It hides everything nicely. I'm going to get a screen to put behind it so we can cover up the tv when we have guests. The bench provides valuable extra seating and wonderful storage. Thanks Overstock!"

"I'm very happy with this cabinet! I use it every day to store my bed linens.It arrived quickly and was well-packed (though they use styrofoam - not very eco-friendly). The pins that hold the doors closed were neatly packed inside the cavity. They were a tight fit, but as I expected, they are easy to use now that I've broken it in.The wood is very nice, and the styling is simple. I'm very glad that I bought this piece."

"Bench came covered in white mold inside and out, and had what looked like cocoons inside. Overstock replaced, but legs on the second unit were not level, so the bench rocks when standing on solid ground. Also has extra stain even after wiping, so care has to be taken not to sit on it, or set it on light colored carpet. Storage space is ok."
