Embroidered Fall Wrap (Afghanistan)

Embroidered Fall Wrap (Afghanistan)

Wrap yourself in this elegant embroidered shawl made with cotton.

This beautiful 54-in. W x 24-in. L shawl, has five-inch embroidered borders and fringes. You can choose from three options of black on maroon, white on grey or white on cream.

During the last two decades of war in Afghanistan many families have been left without a traditional male bread winner. Women have started to support their families by making elegant pieces mainly for tourists in Afghanistan. Embroidery is a skill that almost every young girl in Afghanistan learns, as she grows.

These fascinating wraps were discovered during a recent trip to Afghanistan made by Overstock President Patrick Byrne and Worldstock Director Neelab Kanishka. The two met personally with artisans and placed orders with a producer group managed by two Afghani women, Laila and Najiba. These two entrepreneurs find female artisans in their western Kabul neighborhood and introduce them to the regional Worldstock office in Kabul. The removal of the Taliban has created an exciting time in Afghanistan for enterprising women like Laila and Najiba. Now freed from the yoke of oppression, they can explore their dreams of creating a better life for themselves and their community.

Indulge yourself with one of these elegant shawls, or surprise a new bride with a beautiful gift and an exotic story behind it, one that she will keep for a long time!

The handcrafted nature of this product will produce minor differences in color and sizing. Subtle shade variations will occur from piece to piece, adding to its unique qualities. Measurements are approximate.

"Just received this beautiful wrap in the 'red' color which is really a burgundy/wine color. Very impressed with the quality and beauty of this shawl. And I still can't believe the price. What a bargain! Am ordering another in one of the other colors. Wish there were more color options such as blue, green, pink, etc. Highly recommended."

"These wraps are treasures! I ordered the cream one to wear on my wedding day, and will order more for my bridesmaids. They are soft, and the needlework intricate. To know that the proceeds for these wraps are going directly to women artisans in Afghanistan gives me great, great joy. My fiancee is Iranian--he is equally delighted by the artistry, the familiar patterns, and, of course, by the cause. Thank you!"

"I too saw the Today Show and wrote down your internet address to see the scarves. I ordered and received mine a couple of weeks ago and must comment how absolutely lovely the needle work is! It is truly a "feel-good piece" in any weather but as well, it is a very well handmade and unique "work of art". I really love it. Thank you for offering such an item. joyce"
