The Story Behind the Product
Nana was born to a family of 9 children in the town of Kumasi in Ghana, West Africa. His parents divorced when he was only 8 years old and Nana became so rebellious that his mother sent him to live with his father in Tamale (in the Northern region of Ghana) when Nana was 12 years old. It was there that he developed an interest in art. He dropped out of school when he was 14 and started training with a master carver in Tamale. In 2000 Nana began selling his products through Worldstock. Nana is now married with 3 children and lives in Accra, Ghana. He is now a master carver with his own shop and 10 employees. Nana?s life has been so improved since he began working with Worldstock that he named his son after his contact at Overtsock.com.

"Lovely baskets, very reasonably priced. One of the reviews suggested that I soaked them in water, protecting the handles. I did that and they came apart easily.I am happy with my purchase."

"I bought these baskets anticipating Christmas however I have 3 of them throughout my house as they are beautiful and very handy. I have since noticed many people using the baskets at farmers markets for the treasures they find. Love them and hopefully I some left for Christmas presents!"

"When I saw these baskets, I was thrilled... more on the price. When I received them, it was hard pulling them apart and to reshape them but overall, they're great! They make great decorative pieces for shelves and to store bath items in."

"I have a basket like this that I paid twice as much for as these baskets so was excited to find these at this price. I was so dismayed to find these baskets practically crushed, nested inside one another in a smaller shipping box. I read the instructions and figured they would be fine after soaking and they were, aside from some slight damage from them rubbing tightly when trying to extract one from another. I might attempt to wet them first before separating them in order to avoid that next time. I soaked them each in the sink for a short time, keeping the water off the leather handle wraps and reshaped them and they are gorgeous. The colors are so nice, vibrant but not garish, and I know from experience that with some care they will last for years and years. Great decorative items that are practical and pretty."

"I'm always lugging things from place to place. Rather than having cardboard boxes laying around I saw these baskets and thought how great they'd look as decorative items, and as carry-alls. They work wonderfully. They have a great leather-wrapped handle at top that's strong and easy on my hands, and they have that authentic "variations are a part of the natural beauty of the piece" look. I love them for their dual usefulness - as decorative items, and to get things from place to place in style."

"I have purchased this set twice. I ended up giving away the first set because they make wonderful gift baskets. I use the largest basket to hold magazines, the middle size for food shopping and the smallest one for picnics. They are very sturdy. It is important to me that the baskets are made with ethical labor and environmental standards."

"I received these baskets quickly, and they're really great. I was a little disappointed that the colors of mine were so similar, but realize that each order varies, so you don't know what you're going to get. Mine are neutral colors which I'm sure I'm going to appreciate when I start to use them around the house. I have seen these baskets for much more in other places, so they're a great deal, and I also love knowing that my purchase is helping people less fortunate. I highly recommend them!"

"These baskets are wonderful--as long as you realize that they are hand-crafted, and will not be machine-perfect. They are large (different sizes, but none of them is small), and all different patterns, too. They did come somewhat crushed in the shipping box, but looked pretty good after I pushed them back into shape. I almost stopped there, thinking they wouldn't be much nicer with more effort. I was wrong--thanks to the previous reviewers, who recommended dampening the baskets and reshaping them, I took these baskets to the shower. A little warm water, a little pushing and pulling, and they looked GREAT! If you can, dampen them first, before you "fix" them coming out of the box--I slightly cracked some of the strands in one basket handle in my initial shaping, probably because the grasses were too dry to be flexible. (Not to worry; a short piece dental floss is holding everything together nicely.) I was so pleased with my results, that I got creative. The largest basket, when fully round, was a bit too big to be useful for me--wouldn't fit on a shelf, too large for the corner. So, back to the shower with it, some more shaping, and now I have an oval basket I can use for magazines, to hold towels in the bathroom, to take to the farmers' market...you get the idea. I may just get more, for myself, or as gifts for basket-loving friends. These are very useful and attractive, and you will find yourself thinking up many uses for them."

"I found the baskets to be very colorful and made exceptionally well . They were a bit smashed in the box but I felt it gave more credibility to being a basket! the handles are good and I found no broken fibers in the basket bottoms at all ! They were perfect for what I wanted."

"These baskets are gorgeous. The workmanship is beautiful. The handles are strong. They look great and hold a lot. My only complaint is that the baskets were crammed into a small box for shipping and they are still a bit misshaped. For the price, they are wonderful!!"

Caring for these baskets,December 18, 2007
By Friedenfrom Vermont
"It's easy to restore these baskets to their shape after shipping. Dip them in water (or spray them) then re-form them. They will dry in a few hours and hold their shape beautifully. If they ever start getting lopsided again, just re-wet them and re-form them. I use my beautiful Ghanaian baskets for carrying everything. They also look nice on the top of bookshelves."
